The clavicle is the most common broken bone in motocross to
my experience. And to my knowledge there is no successful
surgical realignment and pinning procedure that is of any benefit
or that can perform. But we are hopeful. When the bone
is realigned to its original anatomical position it heals much
faster. So, with a fractured clavicle it is a much better
idea to avoid surgical intervention of a collarbone fractures.
The best initial treatment protocol (listed below) includes
a figure 8 belts with an arm sling and a waistband arm immobilizer
to stabilize the arm to the body. This initial procedure
has have had the best success with this fracture at first.
Additionally you can follow the RICES-S rule and the application
of ceramic magnetics. Chiropractic spinal manipulation
is also a good idea. So first, let's discuss what a normal
bone structure of the shoulder looks like so when you that you
will be able to spot the fracture just as quickly a doctor. |
| Normals |
Let's look at a normal shoulder and clavicle
bone structure.
Looking at the right shoulder bone structure

Viewed from standing behind the right shoulder
Below are two x-rays showing a right fractured
clavicle
These two different x-ray views of the
right shoulder area are seen looking from front to back. No
figure 8 support belt is being used.
Note the right clavicle broken bone relationship with the figure
8 support in place
This is a 19 year old rider who cased a triple
jump and his head and shoulders hit the cross bar pad fracturing
his left clavicle bone in two places, cut his chip are required
sutures to close the laceration, injured his cervical spine,
and knocked him out.

This shows the loss in the normal C-curvature
of the neck.
This normally occurs following a fall and is directly
linked
to many other rider problems including forearm pump-up,
numbness and loss of muscle strength in the arms
When you look at the rider this is how a broken
collarbone will appear visually to you.

Next, let's show and discuss the collar bone
support belt known as a figure 8 shoulder belt and some of the
typical treatment protocol procedures that can be implemented
for the rehab of this injury. |

Supports - Figure 8 Belt
The figure 8 belt is the most common supportive treatment

Figure 8 Shoulder Belt Support

This figure 8 belt is the one most riders like the best because
it allows them to adjust the shoulder retraction pressure
from the front buckle.
This is a picture of the regular style figure
8 belt.
This type of figure 8 belt is good but it requires another person
to adjust its tension. |
| Let's review the treatment protocol |
1. The Application of Hot and Cold temperatures
mixed with water. Apply the RICES-Rule
from the chapter on "Hot & Cold Application" as
outlined in the chapter.
2. Skin Brushing is one of the best self-help applications for
accelerating recovery, bruise, swelling
and pain elimination, and connective tissue
regeneration. It is listed as Skin Brushing. Do this two to
three times a day at least. See Skin
Brushing.
3. Epsom Salt & Apple Cider Vinegar Bathing at least once
a day, preferably just before going to
bed. Combine this one with skin brushing. It is listed as
Epsom
Salts Bath.
4. Piezo Electric
Stimulator is a small hand held unit about the size of a
ink pen. Electric stimulation to troubled
or injured areas allows these areas, not only heal
faster, but in most cases heal without the formation of scar
tissue. Applying electrical stimulation
early in any problem allow the body to repair before the
advance needs of chemical poisonous (drugs)
or surgery. Electricity allows the body's
repair program to repair and regenerate the troubled or injured
tissues back to an identical replacement
tissue, making it like new.
5. Essential Oils
Essential Oils is a soothing, penetrating herbal oil and balm
that eases pain and, at the same time promote healing for a
wide variety of conditions including aches, pains, soreness,
tenderness, swelling, and tightness. It was originally developed
by the Sholin Priests to aid their recovery from injuries they
sustained while practicing extremely rigorous martial arts training
and activities. It is a highly successful home treatment for
over 30 known conditions including; injuries, sinus, back pain,
headaches, high stress conditions, sore throats, heartburn,
arthritis, rheumatism & sprains & strains.
Historical, Essential Oils was applied in different manners
to produce its amazing successful results. The Chinese would
rub Essential Oils (in Herb form) gently with a circular motion
(CW = increases its action, CCW = slows its action, in the Northern
Hemisphere). The Essential Oils would begin to liquefy, and
a small ridge would adhere to the finger. With that amount of
balm or oil, the Chinese would then use it for many conditions
and ailments, . Electromagnetics
Electromagnetic therapies (Diapulse) have performance of healing
this bone fracture to a level 2 (normal activity) within 7 days.
And it will reach a level #3 in 14 days (practice riding and
racing) and will reach a level #4 by 21 days (fully race ready).
Medical protocol will have you do nothing for 6 to 8 to 12 weeks.
After surgery MD's offer you nothing that works well at all
and in the process encourage the connective tissues at the site
to atrophy. I have never been impressed with their protocol.
For Diapulse treatment settings see Diapulse Treatment Protocols.

3. Rehab
Exercising |
| Exercising |
Start your exercise rehab program by only
exercise the good or uninvolved side. The exercising of
the good side will produce a 50% crossover hypertrophy exercising
stimulation to the bad or broken arm side. This type of good
side rehab exercising will be performed for the first two to
three weeks before attempting to exercise the broken bone side.
Initial Testing Of The Broken Bone Side
At some point in the future, maybe two or three weeks you can
begin the testing and possible exercising the broken arm side.
Green & Red Zones
To do this initial testing we suggest you start with very small
and simple shoulder-arm movements. Remember while doing
this to always stay within the Green Zone
(Pain Free) of movement. And never move into or exercise
the area in the Red Zone (Pain
Zone) of movement. Also know that being impatient or anxious
and try to move things along to quickly will also get you in
trouble and could cause set backs in your rehab program.
The shoulder joint has 8 different directions of movement.
So, start out by moving the arm in a front direction first.
And then try moving the arm in a back direction. You may
only be able to move either way only a few degrees or more.
This is normal. Also know that being impatient or anxious
and try to move things along to quickly will also get you in
trouble and could cause set backs in your rehab program.
If you are able to move your arm forward and backward try to
move it out and in just a little. Remember to say well
within the Green Zone (Pain Free Zone) during all of your rehab
exercising.
The shoulder joint can also be elevated and lowered. Staying
within the Green Zone try moving your shoulder joint up and
them try lowering it.
Routinely it takes approximately four weeks to complete all
four phases where the individual remains in each phase approximately
one week. This time frame can vary according depending upon
many factors.
The muscle groups necessary to exercise in the shoulder, whether
to the uninvolved or contralateral side or to the injured side
are:
1. Shoulder Flexion
2. Shoulder Extension
3. Shoulder Vertical Abduction
4. Shoulder Vertical Adduction
5. Shoulder Horizontal Abduction
6. Shoulder Horizontal Adduction
7. Shoulder Internal Rotation
8. Shoulder External Rotation
Remember it should take 2 seconds to travel through each direction
of its 90 degrees range of motion. And it should take another
2 seconds to travel back to initial starting position.
There will be a total of 4 second of time per rep in all of
the below exercises. Doing 1 set of 6 reps will take 24 seconds
to complete. Rehab practice makes permanent. Do it slowly
and perfectly. Be demanding on yourself to perform it
correctly every rep and every set.
Also remember that if the exercising unit is to difficult for
your muscles to pull, move towards the exercising unit a little
closer. This action decreases the stress load on
the exercising unit and it becomes less tight. Remember
this ir rehab exercising not athletic body building and development.
Remember to read and review the chapter on Rehab
Exercising before starting your exercise program.
Now let's take a closer look at how to specifically exercises
listed in the above muscle groups starting with shoulder flexion.

This Rehab Exercising Program really works great with shoulder
problems. Start off with crossover exercising stimulation. That
is to say work or exercise the good arm through its full range
of motion (isotonic surgical tubing). The bone is required to
heal by over lapping the two broken bone pieces with fibrous
connective tissues. This process varies depending on the practitioner's
level of understanding and their ability to apply Wholistic
therapeutics. Drugs only slow down the healing process. Pain
is controlled very easily with N-1 and N-2 ceramic magnetic
(see Ceramic
magnetic in the Electromagnetic Therapies in the Health
Care section of the library). Also exercising in the green (pain
free) zones for overflow work exceptional well. For more on
"Cross Over" and "Overflow" see our web
site in the Health Care section listed as "Rehab
Exercising Program" For sets and reps also see Rehab
Exercise Program.
Also read about how Arch
Supports can accelerate broken bones to heal by balancing
the body's biomechanical musculoskeleto system and greatly reduces
stress. Do the simple tape test listed towards the end
of the chapter to see if arch supports will help your condition. |
